The Jewish Heritage of Thessaloniki – 4 days / 3 overnights
The city was founded by King Cassander of Macedonia in 315 B.C. and proudly presents its uninterrupted 23-century history.
The history of the Jews of Thessaloniki reaches back two thousand years. The so-called Romaniotes Jewish arrived from Alexandria – Egypt around 140 B.C. In 1376 the Askenazim were settled in the city after escaping the pogroms in Hungary and Germany. Sephardites were called the 20.000 Hispano-Jewish deported from Spain. In 1870, the 50.000 Jewish residents constituted 56% of the city's population. The year 1943 marks the beginning of the end of the Jewish presence in Thessaloniki when 46.091 Jewish were led to the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau, only to return 1950 of them.
Worldwide leading figures descend from the booming jewish community of Thessaloniki, such as: Nicola Sarkozy – ex-president of France, Patrick Modiano – Nobel prize winner in literature, the hair stylist Vidal Sasoon and many others.
Today, the arcades of the city's historical center, the beautiful mansions, the Synagogues and the Jewish Museum mark the significant presence of the Jewish community in Thessaloniki.
