Salonica Front WWI Thessaloniki – 4 days / 3 overnights
The city was founded by King Cassander of Macedonia in 315 B.C. and proudly presents its uninterrupted 23-century history. Thessaloniki became an important city of the Roman Empire and the second most important during the Byzantine Empire.
After being part of the Ottoman Empire for almost 500 years, Thessaloniki was liberated in 1912 and became hub for the allied troops of Entent during WWI and a big part of Jewish memorial during WWII.
The Macedonian Front of WWI, also known as the Salonica Front (Thessaloniki's Front), was formed as a result of an attempt by the Allied Forces in the autumn of 1915, against the central powers. After several battles, the Salonica Campaign concluded on 30 September 1918.
Today, the city reveals its role during WWI with allied military cemeteries, war museums and historical buildings. The Commonwealth War Graves commission cares for 12 cemeteries and memorials in Northern Greece including the largest one, Zeitenlik Allied Military Cemetery, in Thessaloniki (20.500 Commonwealth and Allied burials).
